My all time favorite memory is from my family's trip to Germany for Christmas when I was in 4th grade. The day we're supposed to leave, a huge blizzard hits Germany and our train leaves the station well behind schedule. I make a new (English speaking) friend on the train who had been visiting his brother who was studying in Lichtenstein. Anyway, we make it to the airport 30 minutes before our plane is supposed to leave, and my new friend directs us where to go, and we tear down the hall to make it to our gate. We barely make it, get on the plane, and then sit on the tarmac for 8 hours waiting for our plane to de-ice. There were quite a few characters on that plane...

One of my favorite memories is of a camping trip my family took over spring break of my senior year of high school. As tradition goes in my family, when its night while we are camping we sit around playing cards and sharing stories. On this particular evening, we were playing the card game Pit, which has potential to be quite a boisterous game. It was by no means late at night, but apparently we were so much of a disturbance to the college kids camping next to use, that they sprang out of their tents, broke camp in a hurry and sped away shouting some of the catch phrase from out game as we went. I guess you just had to be there.

My parents and I took a 4-day trip to Belize for Thanksgiving in 1999. A few highlights:
1) lobster for Thanksgiving dinner
2) snorkeling with my parents in warm, crystal clear water - in November.
3) watching my dad curiously stick his hand down a pipe sticking out of a wrecked ship and getting bitten, presumably by some sort of eel.

My family has been on a lot of trips, but the best has got to be when my entire family (including immediate and all of my cousins, aunts, and uncles on my mother's side) went to long beach, nc (it no longer exists thanks to some hurricane; it's just oak island now). It was absolutely beautiful and non-touristy. I loved it and we still go back from time to time. In fact, we're going this summer! Oh, and while we were there Marie decided to throw up on the family friend. She can tell you more about it!

On our way home from one of our traditional family camping trips when i was about 5 years old...my family was driving along in our 1978 Ford LTD on a 2 lane country road in rural Texas. In the days before mini vans- my family sported the LTD- complete with roof topper and plastic over-the- armrest cup holder attachments that gracefully matched the car's steel blue interior appointments. there were five of us crammed in the LTD...and in the backseat, my sisters and I were cramped, sweaty, tired, and generally pissy after a fun, but exhausting weekend of wilderness and wonderment. then- with action movie like timing- we heard a HUGE boom and our car began to shake violently! My dad managed to keep us on the road and in our lane (a miracle to be sure...) and when we finally made it safely to the shoulder- pops looked beneath the beast to find that THE DRIVE SHAFT HAD FALLEN OUT OF THE CAR. Incredibly, we managed NOT to vault to a certain death in that no-name Texas town because the bolt responsible for the trouble was at the rear differential and not at the transmission...phew....disaster averted.

This was also in the days before cell phones...but we managed to hail down some help- and eventually a tow truck came to our aid and took my dad and our wounded warrior to a local shop where a crusty old chap rigged us up macgyver style so that we could get the rest of the way home.

what a trip...

Thank you liz for bringing up that wonderful bit of information about that trip. However, I would have to agree that was probably my favorite family vacation with the ENTIRE family because it was the only vacation with the ENTIRE family. For real though, it was a lot of fun because our entire family was packed into a house and there was never a dull moment.
